Denial is a stage that most alcoholic goes through. It is hard to admit that you have a problem that you can’t resolve alone. The first step towards recovery, however, is to admit the truth so you can do something about it. Unless you admit to the problem it is never going to go away.
Most people who are alcohol dependant think that they can stop drinking at any time. The hardest thing to do is to face the fact that you have a dependence on alcohol. They have probably watched you deteriorate and either know or have a strong suspicion that you have a drinking problem. Opening up to them will life the weight on everyone’s shoulders.
Some people avoid admitting the truth because they fear what lies ahead. Yes, there will be some rough patches but the outcome is that you get your life back and can live a full and happy life. You will be able to lead a good life and have a normal family life again.
Getting help is a big step in the recovery process. Once you have admitted that you have an alcohol problem you will need to get into recovery. But there are many local hospitals that have alcohol rehab programs that aren’t expensive.
When you enter a rehab center the first thing you can expect is detoxification. This is a process that the body needs to go through when it no longer gets alcohol. For some it can be a pretty rough time but this period only lasts a day or two. Once you go through that phase the worst physical portion is over. The rest is mental. You will need to discover the real you and make a commitment to not drinking.
After rehab you will often need to take part in a twelve-step program. This is a list of 12 things that you need to do in order to remain alcohol free. These programs provide you support by assigning a person who has already gone through the program to help you or sponsor you. Remaining alcohol free will become easier as time goes on.
