5 Steps To Help You Recover From Alcoholism

1. Admit your problem
The first and foremost thing that you can do to help yourself start to recover is to admit that you have a problem with alcohol abuse. This is often the hardest thing to admit. If you think you have a problem you probably do. Many people feel that they are only social drinkers or that they can stop at any time, however they may just be fooling themselves.
2. Seek treatment
Once you know that you have an alcohol problem you need to seek treatment immediately. Don’t put it off for even one minute. Treatment can be a rehab facility or an alcohol treatment center. It can also be a group such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The type of treatment that will work best for you will depend on the depth of your problem. Most successful treatments combine medication with therapy and behavior modification. These together will help pull you through the rough road ahead.
3. Get your family involved
Family and close friends want to help you and see you get better. They are often more willing than you can imagine to help you in any way they can. Once you determine your course of action get them involved. Have them help you through the rough times. Count on them to coach you when you become weak. Let them know exact ways that they can help and they will feel as though they are doing their part in your recovery program. As a result you will also have stronger bonds with them than ever before.
4. Get continued support
Treatment centers or rehab facilities are great and will get you through the crucial first few weeks or months. But after that you are on your own. You’re back to your old routine and in many cases the pull towards alcohol is again very strong. To keep you on the right path you need to have continued support. Join a local alcohol support group. Besides AA there are hospitals and churches often have alcohol groups that meet locally. These groups will provide the support you need to stay sober.
5. Live your life
Look to the future. Try to stop dwelling on the past and focus on the present and the future. You can’t change what has happened but you can use it to create a better life for yourself and for your family as you move forward.
